MacBeth: Emotional Response

This August 1992 National Geographic image was selected by scenographer Kari Glass as an emotional response for director Susan Raley's WITCHES-AS-BIRDS concept for La Costa Canyon High School production of MACBETH.
Rugged majestic rams graze along the Alaskan alpine heath. Three mischievous magpies scavenge upon the decapitated head of this great fallen Denali Dall sheep slain by wolves along the raging Toklat River. This once regal ram is gleefully ravished and devoured by the all consuming corvid crones.

When shall we three meet again
In thunder, lightning, or in rain?
When the hurlyburly's done,
When the battle's lost and won.
Where the place? Upon the heath
There to meet with MacBeth.
I come Graymalkin!
Paddock calls. Anon!
Fair is foul, and foul is fair.
Hover through the fog and filthy air.

MacBeth: Witch Design No. 1

Kari Glass is currently researching and designing MACBETH for director Susan Raley. The director envisions the three witches having bird qualities and Hecate with a snowy owl alter ego. These birdlike characters will be able to molt, shedding their feathers to reveal their true inner crone.
