Beach bounced bottles, bleached battered banged

Sea sunk, sand scraped, salt soaked sun.

Water worn, weather whipped, washed with waves

Turbid turned tides, tip-tossed by time.

PORTRAIT PAINTINGS: Art Historical Context

Oil on Canvas 16 X 20" Grisaille 1980 by Kari Glass

This underpainting is a study from a Thomas Couture portrait housed in the collection of the California Palace Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco. In 1980 Kari Glass was granted permission to paint this homage to Couture in the museum while studying drawing and painting at San Jose State University (SJSU) from Maynard Dixon Stewart with formal training in linear perspective, foreshortening and the technique of rendering a heightened illusion of mass, volume, and dimension when illuminated from a single light source.

Oil on Paper 20 x 36 Homage to Edward Hopper 1989 by Kari Glass

Kari Glass studied painting from Spencer Mosely, Michael Daily, Michael Spafford and life painting from Norman Lundin at the University of Washington in the BFA painting program in 1986. Kari painted a section of an Edouard Hopper image in/exterior cityscape as a backdrop to the portrayed seated model.
